When everybody else was looking at the obstacles, I was training to jump

Michail Kampourakis was born and brought up on Kalymnos until the age of 16, when he moved to Athens to study. Today he is still only 26 years old and is considered by many as an up and coming fashion model of Greece. With only 2 years presence in the fashion industry his career is impressive, and if you ask my opinion he is the sexiest Greek guy alive and you will soon find out why…

I met him one Sunday morning, 5 years ago, having a coffee with mutual friends. Tall, Mediterranean, with a Kalymnian hearty smile and eyes that radiate an ocean sense. It’s not hard to like him as he is always willing to listen to what you have to say. And that’s quite an asset nowadays. A few months later, during some days off his military service, he told me he was going to work as a fashion model. “I don’t think I will talk to you anymore, as I tend not to socialize with snobbish people” I replied. To my surprise I still do and having a chat with him is always a pleasure. Talking to him over a beer I realize he is not arrogant at all about his achievements. And they are more than anyone could have expected.7

Michail is a man of few words. His first contact with the fashion world came while serving in the Greek armed forces. At that time he was collaborating with an advertising agency. One day a photographer, friend of his, asked him to pose for him in order to test his new lights. Michail had never done a shooting before. That was the first step and a couple of months later he catwalks for the Greek fashion designer Apostolos Mitropoulos during the Madwalk 2012 Show. At this show Michail was presented as the ultimate hot male in a sexy outfit.

Since he was a javelin thrower years ago, Michail had a very muscular body and it was difficult for him to fit the model sizes. But with a dietician and a tough workout program he loses 20kg and many people in the Greek fashion industry start whispering his name. After that, he was booked as the only male model in the video clip with the famous Greek singer “SHAYA” on the track “LENE” and his face fills our screens.

In 2013, Michail packed some clothes in a suitcase and headed off to Milan alone to find an agency and start his career, having no clue what was about to happen. Soon enough he signs a contract with one of the biggest agencies in town, for 1 month and stays 5. “It was a trip that changed my life. During my 5 months there, I lived the summary of a lifetime. Starvation, love, fights, passions, disappointment, anger, rejection, even the loss of a close friend. Some clients were calling me God and others just said “next please”. During my stay I had to become skinier so I lost 13 more kilos, as the European fashion industry likes more editorially skinny people than bigger commercial guys like me. Food is my no 1 pleasure , so I do double trainings every day to keep in shape”. Milan was just the beginning of a big trip, because Michail is now represented by numerous fashion model agencies in Italy, France, Spain, Germany, Switzerland, Romania, Belgium and even New York lately.

Michail has done lots of interesting editorials and covers in magazines for Milan, NYC and Paris. His highlights so far include being booked to be the face for the 2015 international campaigns of Bigotti, and Cross jeans. Back in 2013, during Milan fashion week he walked for some European brands, among them Ports 1961. Last season during MFW he closed the Laifei show. In 2012 he did a commercial for Nivea in Paris.

When I ask him, in a curious, I admit, way, if he had met with any really famous people, he replies: “Of course! Now I’m part of the system. Social networking, parties, galas are part of this industry. I have been at the same table with many important artists in the fashion industry. This world is full of creative people and you always meet new people, but I always miss my important people back in Greece such as my friends and family.21

Michail is not just a model. He has a Political Science and History Degree from Panteion University in Athens, speaks English and Italian fluently and has a very good command of French. I asked him about peoples’  reactions to his level of education. He admits “they get shocked. Ifyou want to be a model you have to devote yourself to it from an early age, but I had other priorities. You see, education for me is the strongest weapon, so I chose to finish my studies and then try modeling. So when I’m telling them about my educational studies they say I’m too clever to be a model. I respond with a smile, saying that neither education nor beauty are an indication of intelligence”.12

Its almost 3 years now that you are in this business, what are the things that you get out of it?: “It’s not a piece of cake! Being a model means you frequently face bitterness, deprivation of many things and stress. But which job at the end does not have this in the menu? Models share apartments sometimes during the shows with up to 8 people who you never met before with different lifestyle, education and personalities. You have to be well dressed all the time and everywhere because you’re a model. To survive all that, you should feel comfortable with yourself and have a strong personality. Many times I fought with myself wondering why I wasn’t booked for this or that job. I believe every professional model should be in a non stop search of any new way to make himself or herself more attachable to the given times and streams. At least that’s what I’m trying to do. In my opinion, the best solution is to stay true to who you really are. Modeling is being considered by many people as a cheap and easy occupation. This is untrue! For example for what many people see as a very simple photo in a magazine the model spends many hours studying his or her face, angles, body even the chemistry with the photographer. Many times you have to shoot in front of dozens of people even naked and being censored by them or shoot while a very close person to you is in the hospital. The client has paid for a specific result and he wants it, no matter what happens in your life at that moment, you just have to deliver!

Why did you choose to be a model? “You don’t choose what you like, it just happens. For example I like blue just because I like it. We like things just like that. It’s simple. I wouldn’t be where I am today though if it weren’t for my booker and all the people and coworkers who helped me from my beginning and for sure last but not least all these people from the social media and public networks for the support.

His plans for the future are many, but he prefers them to be realised first and let them unveil on their own. What I can tell you is that he will spend his Christmas Holidays in NYC because of a shooting with Rick Day. Somewhere here I stop interrogating him and we continue to talk grasping another beer at the pub on the square.
